Benefit reform – the perfect storm

From April 2014, the government will now pay five benefits directly to claimants’ bank accounts on a monthly basis rather than directly to creditors such as Housing Associations and private landlords. Claimants will need to claim online for this ‘Universal Credit’, at central points, e.g. Job Centre Plus if they don’t have internet access and DWP will pay all benefits in one payment monthly to claimants’ bank accounts. Following evidence from pilots of potential issues including fears of soaring rent defaults, DWP will encourage Direct Debits and has arranged to facilitate direct payment of rent for vulnerable claimants.
