ICM LONDON & EAST OF ENGLAND BRANCHES GOLF DAY 27 June 2014
at Hertfordshire Golf & Country Club
The weather forecast for our annual Golf Day was terrible, with an 80% chance of rain, and the course marshal explained before the start that we must listen out for the klaxon and the bird scarers telling us that thunder and lightning meant an immediate return to the safety of the clubhouse.
Needless to say, when the first four ball group set off after tasty bacon rolls and coffee, the sun was shining and, despite occasional threatening clouds, there was not a single drop of rain until the competition had finished! Nonetheless all of the players were grateful for the generosity of Smith & Williamson LLP and Buttsbury Consulting in providing both refreshing cool drinks, and hot tea and coffee, at the half way hut.
As this was London Branch’s 21st annual Golf Day it was designated a “key of the door” event and we went back to the original seven eighths handicap Stableford scoring system invented by Dr Frank Stableford and first used in competition at Wallasey Golf Club in 1932. For our team competition every team member’s Stableford score counted on every hole.
The winning team, with an impressive 130 Stableford points, were all guests of Hays Credit Management, comprising Girish Padhiar and Balbir Bagria, both of Selex ES Limited, and Allan Thompson and Paul Durant, both of Markit. The prizes for the team competition were generously donated by Smith & Williamson LLP.

ICM East of England Branch Chairman Richard Brown’s Buttsbury Consulting team, comprising Peter Applegate, formerly of PwC, Paul Campbell formerly of NHS, and Trevor Huckle, formerly of Ingleton Wood, was second in the team competition.
East of England Branch Treasurer David Seago’s Kelvin Hughes Ltd team of Richard Myers, Shane Bartlett and Alan Parkin were third.
It was a successful day for Allan Thompson, who also won both the individual player competition, with 37 Stableford points, and the longest drive competition. Both of these prizes were also generously donated by Smith & Williamson LLP.

Richard Brown, Chairman of ICM East of England Branch and the owner of Buttsbury Consulting, won the nearest to the pin competition, sponsored by CRS Electronics Ltd, on the tricky 15th green protected by much water – which many of the competitors found!

The day was organised by and hosted, in fine style as usual, by Mike Wykes, of Smith & Williamson and Membership Officer of the ICM London Branch.
Events concluded with dinner and prize giving and all agreed that the venue for the 2015 Golf Day on Friday 26 June 2015 should once again be The Hertfordshire Golf and Country Club.
ICM London Branch and ICM East of England Branch would like to thank the staff at the Hertfordshire, and our generous sponsors Smith and Williamson LLP, CRS Electronics Ltd, and Buttsbury Consulting.
Both Branches would also like to thank all who took part, Hays Credit Management and Kelvin Hughes Ltd for their support, and, as ever, would welcome past and new golfers, and old and present and new sponsors, to participate next year.
