Membership grades are awarded on a combination of experience and qualifications.  The letters after your name demonstrate where you are in your career and/or study.  As you progress, you will be eligible for a membership upgrade, to ensure your level always reflects your current position.

Member (MICM)

This grade is for those who can demonstrate a minimum of 5 years experience at management level in the credit profession.

Applicants for the Member grade must meet the following criteria:

  • have a minimum of five years experience at management level in the credit profession or its ancillary services.
  • support their application by providing independent, verifiable evidence to confirm this.
  • applicants from the ancillary credit services field should be able to produce evidence that:

a) their management level experience was acquired in a credit related organisation.
b) they performed a role associated with that organisation’s credit operations, credit personnel or the credit function of its clients.

We do not expect applicants to have had experience of every aspect of credit management and we will take account of this in considering your application.  Please remember, however, we do expect five years management experience to be substantiated.

Successful applicants may use, whilst in membership, the designatory letters MICM.

Fellow (FICM)

Fellowship is the highest ICM membership accolade so the criteria are naturally both stringent and demanding.

There is no direct admittance to Fellowship and applicants must be paid-up full vocational or graduate Members of the Institute having been so for at least 5 years continuously and demonstrated support for the Institute.  A statement should be provided outlining the nature of their support which might, for example, include direct involvement in – or promoting – its activities, or introducing new members.

Applicants for Fellowship must meet two of the following four criteria:

1. they will occupy a position of significant responsibility within credit management and will have done so for at least seven years.

Position of significant responsibility will be a senior managerial role or one carrying a high degree of accountability involving strategy, policy formulation, and responsibility for operations matters.  Typically, in a large organisation it would be expected to report direct to the Board of Directors.

2. they will have made a notable contribution to the credit profession over at least five years.

Notable contributions include published articles or texts, research, teaching, lecturing and/or promotional work.

3. they will have participated in Institute national or branch affairs, having held office or served on a committee for several years.

4. they will, through their career achievements, have increased the regard or recognition accorded to the Institute or to the credit profession.

Career achievements might include the development of a high profile credit operation, success as an outcome of having taken earlier initiatives, and/or through becoming a person of high repute within the industry.

Successful applicants may use, whilst in membership, the designatory letters FICM.

Fellows who have qualified for MICM(Grad) status may use the designatory letters ‘FICM(Grad)’ as continuing recognition of their academic achievement.  This arrangement is optional, and there are no plans to change the criteria for upgrading to Fellowship or introduce a new grade.  The ICM will continue to use the designatory letters of ‘FICM’ for all members (MICM and MICM(Grad)) who upgrade.
